ABBA Committees

If you want to get involved and can spare a few hours of your time to support ABBA, we have something for you. It doesn't have to be a major commitment. Any ABBA member can participate in committees. You do not have to be a board member. You could write an article for Fanfare, stuff envelopes a few weekends before Homecoming, or help us find ways to increase and retain membership. ABBA is filled with bright, capable people and we'd love to work with you. Below is a list of our committees and a general outline of what they do. If you are interested in one or more of the committees, please contact the committee chair directly!

Membership

In an attempt to grow and thrive as the largest alumni group at Penn State, the ABBA membership committee is working to increase membership in all decades, but especially in recent years. We are organizing a social during Blue-White weekend to which current Blue Band seniors will be invited. This committee is also dedicated to increasing the benefits of joining ABBA. Ideas or questions should be directed to Helen at the office at ham14@psu.edu.

Homecoming

Our marquee event for ABBA and therefore a critical committee. Help is needed in various stages of planning, from organizing hotel rooms and stuffing music folios weeks in advance to organizing social events and checking instruments back in after the game. Ideas or questions should be directed to ABBA's Homecoming Chair Sue Delanko.

Finance

Naturally an important part of any large group, the finance committee handles the budget and transactions of ABBA. Ideas or questions should be directed to Ben Heller, benhellerpsu@yahoo.com.

Nominations

This committee manages inquiries from anyone interested in joining the ABBA Board of Directors. This committee is responsible for ensuring proper representation of each decade on the board, per the ABBA Constitution, and providing resources for committee participation. Individuals can nominate themselves for elections which are scheduled each year in autumn, usually before Homecoming. Elected terms are for three years and commence January of the year following election. Volunteers for committee participation are welcome at any time throughout the year from the general ABBA membership. Committee participation is a good way to learn more about Board activities and prepare for election. Anyone interested in participating in Board committees or elections should contact Helen at the office at ham14@psu.edu.

Pep Bands

Because ABBA is an attractive commodity, this committee is charged with organizing regional pep bands in larger markets to handle requests and to give members a chance to perform in their local area. The pep bands committee is looking for points of contact in various areas to participate as opportunities arise. Keep your Blue Band skills current by participating in pep bands through the year. Ideas, questions, and requests for pep band performances should be directed to Lee Shaw, leeshawpgh@juno.com.

Communications

Responsible for all communications to the ABBA membership and outreach to non-members. Publications include The Fanfare, our print newsletter, and the ABBA Web site. Further, this committee works collaboratively with the remaining committees on increasing awareness of ABBA functions and opportunities for members to connect. Questions specific to our website should be directed to Steve Pierce at steven.pierce@psualum.com. Aspiring Fanfare contributors should contact Tom Range, trange2@comcast.net.

Blue-White Weekend

A new Penn State tradition starting in 2006 ABBA members come to Penn State for the weekend and participate in the Blue-White Game performance with the Blue Band. Social and other events are included in the festivities all weekend. For more information contact Ben Heller, benhellerpsu@yahoo.com.
